  • On #ThisDayinHistory 1941, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and other U.S. bases on Oahu, Hawaii, spurring the U.S. to enter WWII. In a mere hour and 15 minutes, hundreds of Japanese warplanes descended on Hawaii. The Japanese assault destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and more than 1,000 were wounded. Despite the losses and being caught off guard, U.S. service members fought back hard, and managed to fire more than 284,000 rounds of ammunition at the Japanese attackers. The Japanese losses included 29 aircraft, five midget submarines and some 100 causalities. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. #PearlHarbor #PearlHarborDay #WWII #WorldWarII #USHistory
